Since July 2024, Australian regulations have prohibited engineered stone containing more than 1% crystalline silica in benchtops, splashbacks, cladding and similar applications Porcelain has now received more attention which it deserves by all means! However, the industry pioneers such as Cosentino and Caesarstone have invented some new materials to keep the most loved designs and to comply with the Australian regulations at the same time. Some new brands have also been promoted on the market and you need some useful information to understand better which of them meet your demands and budget.
I will name some of the materials which I love for their beauty, quality and versatility.
QXERON (former Silestone) is an advanced approach into fine interior design solutions, where balance and surfacing technology meet to redefine interiors and enable a new era of zero crystalline silica surfaces. This is the most recent and budget option for a benchtop. DEKTON is a carbon neutral ultracompact porcelain surface with an optimised manufacturing process inspired by the beauty and aesthetics of natural stone that goes beyond nature, achieving the highest product performance. DEKTON is available in a variety of thicknesses which provides for an almost limitless range of applications: 30, 20, 12, 8 0r even 4mm (DEKTON slim). Also, you can choose from three options of finishes: ultra-glossy, matte or velvet.
